Scripture

“Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations.”
Deuteronomy 7:9 (ESV)

Where Does Our Loyalty Lie?

I’ve been called a die-hard Utah sports fan.

Is that a good thing or a bad thing?
Honestly, I still wrestle with what the weight of those words really means.

As a University of Utah athletic alumnus, I love my school. I carry pride in our programs and I want to see Utah succeed in all sports. I even go as far as to actively follow our football and basketball teams via reporting, social media, and online forums. (Embarrassing right?)

But how far does this loyalty go?

Does it hold steady through losing seasons?
Through heartbreaking injuries?
Through the pain of Rose Bowl heartbreaks, frustrating preseason rankings, and the uncertainty of summer camps?

Unfortunately, the answer is yes. I’m tied to it. But that the way my interest changes based on the season is dependent on success. A season of success, im stoked…a season of blunders, I have resentment.

And I know I’m not alone.

Loyal fans stick around through it all busts, bad calls, late-game collapses, and seasons that never meet expectations. But let’s be honest: when the team disappoints, it stings. That loyalty gets tested. It wavers.
It can turn into frustration, bitterness, and fading passion.

Because even the most loyal human love is flawed. It can wear thin. It can become conditional. It can fade.

But what if there was a kind of loyalty, a faithfulness that never faltered?

What if it wasn’t based on performance, reputation, or success?

That’s what Deuteronomy 7:9 begins to unpack.

The Lord your God is God—and He is faithful.
And further still, He is steadfast in His love.

The Supreme, Faithful God

Let’s break it down:

“Know therefore that the Lord your God is God…”

This is not filler language. It’s foundational truth.
God doesn’t just hold the title “God” like a nameplate. The Hebrew phrase here and the underlying Greek ideas reflect a definition that means:

The supreme being. The ultimate reality. The one perfect in power, wisdom, and goodness.

So when Scripture says “the Lord your God is God,” it’s declaring that your God is not a small, distant force—He is the source of everything, the absolute, the unchanging, the sovereign over all creation.

And that supreme God?

“…is faithful.”

Faithful.
That one word carries enormous weight.

Faithful means consistent.
Unshakable.
Never quitting. Never abandoning. Never untrue.

He is faithful even when we’re not.
Faithful even when we fall short, walk away, complain, drift, or rebel.

A Covenant That Endures

“…who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations.”

Here we see two beautiful characteristics of God’s love:

  • Covenant – a binding, eternal promise rooted in His own character.

  • Steadfast love – unchanging affection that is rooted in commitment, not convenience.

And He keeps this—not just for a moment or a season—but for a thousand generations. That’s another way of saying: forever.
His loyalty doesn’t end with you—it extends beyond you, to your children, and your children’s children, and every generation that chooses to love Him and walk in His ways.

What This Teaches Us Today

So what does this mean for us?

  1. God is the standard for faithfulness.
In a world where loyalty is often short-lived and conditional, God remains faithful. He never changes. He never backs out. He doesn’t ghost us, revoke His promises, or lose interest. His faithfulness is part of who He is.

  2. We are called to respond in love and obedience.
This passage isn’t just a declaration—it’s an invitation. God promises steadfast love and covenant relationship with those who love Him and keep His commandments. This means walking in His truth, honoring His ways, and living with hearts surrendered to Him.

Loving God doesn’t just mean warm feelings—it means living aligned with His heart. Yes, we stumble. But the pattern of our lives should reflect love for Him, and trust in His commands.

Today’s Encouragement

In a world where faithfulness is often broken—through friendships, marriages, business relationships, and even church communities—it’s easy to become guarded. Distrust can become second nature.

But not with God.

He is the faithful God.
He doesn’t flinch. He doesn’t fail.
He doesn’t forget.

So today, if you're feeling unsure about where you stand…
If you’re feeling distant from God or disappointed by others…
Let this verse anchor you:

The Lord your God is God.
The faithful God.
The One who keeps covenant and steadfast love—for a thousand generations.

Let that truth reframe your day. Let it stir you to worship. Let it shape how you love, obey, and serve.

Because God’s loyalty to you is unending.
And it’s worth building your whole life upon.
