The Struggle We All Know
Most of us understand what it means to struggle. Maybe you’ve wrestled with a sibling, fought for a position on a sports team, or had tense disagreements with a friend or coworker. Conflict is part of life. We feel it, see it, and often live in it.
But in this passage, Paul is pointing us to something much deeper. He says clearly:
“We do not wrestle against flesh and blood…”
Our true battle isn’t with people. It’s not with your spouse, your kids, your boss, or even yourself. Paul says the real conflict takes place in a different realm altogether, a spiritual one.
The Wrestling You Don’t See
This spiritual war is subtle. It doesn’t announce itself with flashing lights or loud alarms. Instead, it creeps in quietly:
The temptation to compromise when no one’s watching
A voice of shame louder than the truth of the gospel
The isolation that whispers, “You’re alone”
The slow drift from Scripture, prayer, and community
These are not random. They are part of a larger, unseen conflict. But you are not alone in it.
Paul tells us that these are attacks from cosmic powers of darkness, systems of evil and spiritual forces working to pull us away from God. It’s not just you. Every believer faces these battles. And Paul isn't just informing us, he's warning us. This is not simply a human conflict. It’s a cosmic one.
How Do We Stand Firm?
Paul doesn’t leave us wondering how to respond. He gives us a clear command:
“Take up the whole armor of God…”
Why?
So that you may be able to withstand the evil day. So that when the pressure comes, you don’t fall, you can stand.
The armor of God is more than metaphor—it’s a lifestyle of walking in truth, faith, and power:
Belt of Truth – Be honest with yourself and others. Stand on God’s truth, not your own version.
Breastplate of Righteousness – Guard your heart. Live in alignment with God’s character.
Shoes of the Gospel of Peace – Walk with purpose, sharing peace in a chaotic world.
Shield of Faith – Block the lies of the enemy with unwavering trust in God.
Helmet of Salvation – Protect your mind with the assurance of your eternal identity.
Sword of the Spirit – Wield Scripture. Speak the Word boldly and confidently.
Prayer – Stay connected. Stay equipped.
These are not just concepts. They are tools. They are your weapons. They are your defense.
Today’s Encouragement
You’re not imagining it. The spiritual dryness, the fatigue, the scattered mind, it’s all part of the wrestling. And the enemy hopes you won’t recognize the seriousness of it. He wants you unaware, disengaged, and defeated.
But not today.
Today, recognize the battle. Recognize the enemy's tactics. And more importantly, recognize the wisdom in Paul’s warning, that you are not defenseless. You are not alone. You are not meant to fight unarmed.
So take up the full armor of God.
Step into the day ready not perfect, but protected.
