Scripture
“Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.”
— Psalm 55:22 (ESV)
Where Do You Carry Your Weight?
What is a burden every human deals with?
Is it the anxiety of confronting a hard conversation?
The pressure of keeping up with expectations?
The ache of disappointment or betrayal?
The fear of what tomorrow might bring?
The phrase “I feel like the weight of the world is on my shoulders” is more than just hyperbole. For many, it’s a daily reality.
Sometimes our burdens feel small—nagging stress that clings to the edges of our minds. Other times, they feel larger than life, threatening to crush our spirit altogether.
I’ve felt that kind of pressure firsthand. In college, especially, the weight felt relentless. Between the intensity of swim practices, the pressure to perform academically, and the responsibility of being a team captain while managing internal team conflict—it felt like everything rested on me at times. Every action, every word, every decision carried weight. And like many others, I learned how quickly that burden builds.
Whether it’s relationships, family, work, identity, or failure, we all have something trying to weigh us down. And into that pressure, God speaks through Psalm 55:22 with this instruction:
“Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you.”
Breaking It Down
This verse isn’t just a gentle suggestion, it’s a command. Let’s take a deeper look at what each part of it means.
“Cast your burden…”
The Hebrew word for “cast” is shalak, which means to throw, hurl, or release completely. This isn’t a casual handoff, it’s a forceful unloading. God isn’t asking you to share the weight. He’s commanding you to release it entirely.
“…on the Lord…”
We don’t offload our burdens onto coping mechanisms or friends. We cast them onto Yahweh, the covenant-keeping, promise-fulfilling God. The only one strong enough to hold what we cannot.
“…and he will sustain you.”
The Hebrew word sustain (kul) means to nourish, uphold, support, maintain. God doesn’t just remove the weight, He gives you the strength to stand. He nourishes your spirit, holds you together, and walks you through.
“He will never permit the righteous to be moved.”
If you remain in Him, walking in righteousness, He will not let you slip into ruin. He stabilizes the ground beneath your feet, even if everything around you is shaking.
✍️ Charles Spurgeon wrote:
“It is a work of faith to cast our care upon the Lord. It is a practical proof of confidence in Him. We obey His command, and He fulfills His promise.”
This is not wishful thinking. Casting your burdens is an act of trust. A declaration of confidence in God's ability to hold what you cannot.
What This Means for Us
In a world flooded with anxiety, pressure, and overwhelming weight, this verse reminds us of three critical truths:
We are not meant to carry it all.
God has not asked us to manage the burden, He’s asked us to cast it. And in doing so, we demonstrate trust and obedience.God allows certain burdens to lead us back to Him.
Sometimes what we see as a burden is actually an invitation, to lean, to trust, to cast. Burdens aren’t always meant to break us. They’re sometimes meant to bring us back.He promises to sustain and steady us.
God will not let the righteous be shaken. He may not remove the problem instantly, but He strengthens the person enduring it. He replaces anxiety with peace, and fear with faith.
“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
— 2 Corinthians 12:9
✍️ Corrie Ten Boom said it perfectly:
“Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow; it empties today of its strength.”
Today’s Encouragement
Maybe today, you’re carrying something you were never meant to hold.
God doesn’t expect you to walk with the weight of the world on your shoulders.
He invites you to cast it.
To throw it down in faith.
To let Him do what only He can do.
You may feel the pressure.
You may feel weak.
But you are not alone.
And you are not powerless.
The same God who invites your burdens
Is the same God who promises to sustain your soul.
Cast your burden. Trust Him. Let Him carry the weight today.
