Deuteronomy 31:8
“It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; He will not leave you or forsake you. Do not be afraid and do not be discouraged.”
That One Season You’ll Never Forget
What’s that one season of life that, as a kid, you absolutely dreaded?
Maybe it was starting a new school, going to a new camp, or leaving home for the first time. In your mind, it felt like everything could go wrong. You played out worst-case scenarios, imagined uncomfortable conversations, and built it up to be this impossible mountain to climb.
And then — you lived through it. You got to the other side. And more often than not, it wasn’t nearly as bad as you thought it would be. In fact, looking back, it might’ve even been the turning point for something better.
For me, I can clearly point to multiple seasons where I felt that same fear. One in particular was during college — in the middle of COVID, while dealing with an injury and a whole lot of uncertainty. At the time, it felt like the season would never end. College felt pointless. Competing felt out of reach. My identity as an athlete felt shaken.
But now, on the other side, I see what God was doing. He didn’t just leave me to struggle. He allowed that season to stretch me, challenge me, and deepen both my belief and my character. It was during that time I began to build stronger convictions. I started to better understand who I was, not just as an athlete or student, but as a person and as a follower of Christ.
God Goes Before You
That’s why this verse matters. Deuteronomy 31:8 isn’t just a nice phrase to hang on your wall, it’s a promise rooted in action.
“It is the Lord who goes before you.”
God doesn’t outsource guidance. He doesn’t send someone else ahead to figure it out. He personally leads the way into the next chapter of your life. Whether you’re starting something new, facing a tough decision, or walking into an unknown season, He is already ahead of you, preparing the way.
“He will be with you.”
That’s the core promise of this entire verse. God not only goes before you, but He stays with you. He walks alongside you. Through the highs and lows, the moments of clarity and confusion, He is present.
“He will not leave you or forsake you.”
These are two distinct assurances:
Not leave you refers to physical presence.
Not forsake you speaks to emotional or spiritual abandonment.
So even when you feel spiritually weak, when you’re making mistakes, or feel distant from God — He remains. He does not quit on you.
“Do not be afraid and do not be discouraged.”
These aren’t suggestions. They’re commands.
Fear and discouragement are natural responses to the unknown. But God calls us to fight those feelings with trust — because we’re not walking the path alone. We have His presence, His promises, and His power alongside us.
When Life Feels Uncertain
In our modern world, seasons change constantly.
Maybe you’re:
A parent sending your child off to school or college
Starting a new job or leaving a familiar one
Navigating a new relationship
Ending a long-standing one
Facing grief, stress, or uncertainty
Whatever season you’re in, it can be full of fear, doubt, or discouragement. We all want a clear sign. We all want a fast-forward button to see how things turn out. But most of the time, God asks us to simply trust.
Trust that He has gone before us.
Trust that He is with us.
Trust that we’re not abandoned.
Personally, I’ve walked through seasons where I felt like I was in the dark — where I couldn’t see what God was doing. And in the middle of it, it felt long and heavy. But on the other side, I often look back and realize how perfectly it all came together.
God wasn’t absent. He was just guiding.
Today’s Encouragement
Whatever season you are in, whatever fear is in front of you, take this as your reminder:
God is not far.
He has gone before you.
He is with you.
He has not left you.
And He is not about to start now.
So if you’re in a moment of fear or discouragement, take a breath. Surrender that emotion to Him. Ask Him to reveal His presence. Ask for clarity. Ask for strength. And believe that even if you can’t see it yet, He is guiding your every step.
Let your nourishment come not from fleeting comforts, but from eternal truth.
