Scripture

2 Thessalonians 3:2–3 (NIV)
“And pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil people, for not everyone has faith. But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one.”

Wrong Place, Wrong Time

Have you ever heard the phrase, “wrong place, wrong time”?

That phrase can mean a lot of different things, but at its core, it describes being in a situation where your safety or well-being is suddenly at risk. You find yourself somewhere you shouldn’t be, surrounded by circumstances you didn’t expect.

I remember a buddy of mine who visited Thailand during college. He was exploring the city, enjoying time with friends and family, sightseeing and experiencing something new. Everything was going great, until it wasn’t…

He made a wrong turn down an alley that wasn’t friendly to tourists.

Very quickly, the situation changed (and unlucky for him it was in the evening). He was surrounded, pushed around, and threatened. Being in a foreign country, not knowing the language or the environment, made it even more dangerous.

Normally, during the daytime, the area would have been safe. But at night, everything was different.

Luckily, they had connected with a local guide earlier in the trip. That guide stepped in, de-escalated the situation, spoke on their behalf, and helped them safely get out. What could have ended much worse was resolved because someone stepped in who understood the environment and had the ability to protect them.

Delivered and Protected

Now you might say what does this story in Thailand have to do with this verse but there are some unique parallels.

Paul begins by saying:

“Pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil people, for not everyone has faith.”

This is an acknowledgment of reality. Not everyone operates with good intentions. Not everyone shares the same values or beliefs. There is sin in this world, and there are people who oppose truth.

“Wicked” and “evil” are not just extreme ideas, they represent the reality of human nature apart from God. Sin, selfishness, and harmful intentions can exist anywhere, and they can impact anyone.

Paul is reminding us to be aware, but also to pray. To ask for protection and to recognize that we are not immune to these situations.

But then the tone shifts:

“But the Lord is faithful…”

Even when people are not, God is.

He does not fail. He does not change. His faithfulness is constant, regardless of what is happening around you.

“He will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one.”

God doesn’t just remove danger, He strengthens you in the middle of it. He gives you endurance, clarity, and stability when situations feel uncertain.

And He protects you not just emotionally, but spiritually  guarding you from deception, temptation, and anything that tries to pull you away from Him.

Standing Firm in a Broken World

We may not always find ourselves in a literal “wrong place, wrong time” moment like that story. But in a broader sense, we are constantly surrounded by a world that can pull us in the wrong direction.

Whether that be at work, at school, on our technology, or in conversations.

There are countless moments where we are exposed to influences that don’t align with truth.

So the question becomes: how do we stay grounded?

This verse reminds us that even when the world feels unpredictable, God is not. He is faithful to us and can strengthen and protect in all times.

Today’s Encouragement

You may find yourself in moments that feel uncertain, uncomfortable, or even unsafe  physically, emotionally, or spiritually.

But you are not navigating those moments alone.

So when you feel like you’re in the wrong place at the wrong time, remember this:

Even when things feel off or the world is attacking you, you’re not on your own, God is right there with you faithful and protecting.

Stay rooted in him.
