James 5:13
“Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise.”
Where Do You Go With Your Emotions?
I got hit with a hard question the other day:
How do you react when times are tough? And how do you react when times are great?
And when I say react, I mean specifically in your relationship with the Lord.
I think it’s incredibly easy, when life is going well, to just move forward without much thought. You hear it all the time, “Life is good, let’s keep it rolling.” There’s a sense of comfort, and with that comfort, it’s easy to drift.
On the flip side, when life gets hard, the reaction can be just as instinctive. You want to curl up, escape, or forget about what’s happening. You hear that too, “I just want to move on. I just want to forget this.”
But most of the time, that doesn’t actually work.
I know in my own life, I went through a season where we felt like we were losing our business, and eventually, we did. That suffering felt constant, like something I was trying to escape every single day. But when I look back, I didn’t immediately bring that suffering to the Lord. Instead, I turned to frustration, anger, and even resentment toward the people involved. I tried to push through it on my own.
And that’s where this verse becomes so powerful.
What This Is Teaching Us
James keeps it simple, but incredibly direct.
“Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray.”
When we are suffering, our natural instinct is often to hide, avoid, or place blame. But this verse calls us to do something completely different. It calls us to bring that suffering directly to God.
To pray is to open that conversation with Him. To ask for direction, for wisdom, for peace. It shifts the focus from trying to control the situation ourselves to allowing God to guide us through it.
Then James flips to the other side.
“Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise.”
When things are going well, when we experience joy, success, or excitement, it’s easy to take that moment and keep it centered on ourselves. To celebrate the outcome without acknowledging where it came from.
But this verse calls us to redirect that joy back to God.
To praise Him. To recognize that the good in our lives is not just coincidence or personal achievement, but something that ultimately comes from Him.
Bringing It Back to Him
What makes this verse so powerful is its simplicity.
No matter the emotion, the direction is the same.
When you are suffering, pray and when you are joyful, praise.
Everything goes back to Him.
Today’s Encouragement
Every day, every season, every year, you will experience both sides of this.
There will be suffering and there will be joy.
The question is not whether those emotions will come, but where you will take them when they do.
Will you carry them on your own or will you bring them to God?
Prayer is how we bring our pain to Him and praise is how we return our joy to Him.
Both are ways of strengthening that relationship.
So today, no matter what you’re feeling, ask yourself:
How can I bring this to God?
Because whether in suffering or in celebration, every moment is an opportunity to draw closer to Him.
