Joshua 1:9 (ESV)
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

When Fear Creeps In

As humans, we all deal with day-to-day fears, anxieties, and emotions that can easily dictate how we feel and how we respond.

Little things like a big test coming up, a tough practice, or a hard conversation can lead to crippling fear. That fear can consume your thoughts, affect your actions, and ultimately control how you show up in those moments.

I know for myself, one thing that used to consistently affect me was public speaking or having difficult conversations. Those moments would sit in the back of my mind for days. The anticipation alone would create fear, and by the time the moment actually came, my performance would suffer because I had already let that fear take control.

But somewhere along the way, we begin to learn what it means to be courageous.

And that is exactly what this verse is pointing us toward.

Breaking Down the Command

The verse begins with a powerful statement:

“Have I not commanded you?”

This is not a suggestion. It’s not a question for consideration. It is a command that alone should shift how we view what follows. We are not being asked to try to be courageous, instead are being told to be.

Next, He says:

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed.”

This is both the instruction and the challenge. God is calling us to step into strength and courage while actively rejecting fear and discouragement. Those emotions can feel overwhelming, but they are not meant to control us.

So the question becomes: how do we actually do that? How do we live this out when fear feels so real?

The answer comes in the final part of the verse:

“For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

This is the foundation of the command. We are able to be strong and courageous not because of our own ability, but because of His presence. God is with us in every moment, every situation, and every place we go.

That is where true confidence comes from.

Being Courageous in Today’s World

We live in a world where fear is everywhere. There is always something to be anxious about. The next test, the next conversation, the next challenge, the next unknown.

It’s easy to become timid and let fear dictate our decisions.

But this verse brings us back to a constant truth that we are called to be strong and courageous.

Not because life is easy. Not because fear disappears. But because God is with us.

When those moments come, when fear starts to rise and anxiety begins to take over, it becomes an opportunity to trust Him. An opportunity to step forward in obedience rather than step back in fear.

Today’s Encouragement

The next time you feel fear creeping in, pause.

You don’t have to rely on your own strength. You don’t have to have everything figured out. You are not walking into those moments alone.

One simple practice that helped me was writing this verse down and revisiting it in moments of fear. Let it be a reminder that no matter what you are facing, you have the ultimate protector walking with you.
