Scripture

“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’”
— John 8:12 (ESV)

The Fear of the Dark

For anyone who knows me personally, you’ll know that as a kid I was terrified of the dark.

If you ask my parents or any of my siblings, they’ll tell you: there had to be a nightlight. One in the bathroom, one in my room just to fall asleep. It was the only way I could feel safe enough to close my eyes and relax.

Growing up on a farm didn’t help. Sometimes it felt like the land around was constantly making noises and would make a little boys mind run.

Now sure, that fear has mostly faded with time (although I’ll admit it still gets me occasionally…), but the concept of darkness has never really gone away. It just looks different now.

Today, darkness shows up as: fear of the future, fear of success or job, anxiety, doubts, and more.

And into that, Jesus speaks one of the most comforting promises we have:

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness...”

Breaking Down the Verse

“I am the light of the world.”

Jesus is making a bold claim not just that He brings light, but that He is the light.
He is the source of truth, the moral compass, the clarity in confusion, the hope in the middle of despair.

This is one of His “I AM” statements revealing identity and strength behind who he is.

And like a lighthouse guiding ships in the night or runway lights for a plane preparing to land Jesus is our beacon.

He illuminates the path, keeps us from crashing, and shows us where to step next.

“Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness…”

Darkness in Scripture often symbolizes ignorance, sin, spiritual blindness, or even separation from God. Something that each of us as humans has walked through.

But Jesus promises that those who follow Him not just admire Him or know of Him but truly follow Him will never be alone in that darkness.

This is a reassurance unlike any other, as we know that even in the darkest of hours, he will continue to guide us and be by our side.

The light of Christ doesn't always eliminate the storm but it will always lead you through it.

“…but will have the light of life.”

This is the promise of internal transformation.

The “light of life” is not just guidance it’s a new way of living. It’s spiritual vitality. It’s having Christ dwell within you, lighting up every shadowed corner of your soul.

The “light of life” means:

  • Clarity in confusion

  • Joy in sorrow

  • Peace in anxiety

  • Eternal life beyond the grave

This isn’t just survival it’s a life fully lit by truth and love.

Today’s Encouragement

We were never meant to navigate the darkness alone.

Jesus didn’t just come to point to the light He came to be it.

So today, if you’re overwhelmed, ff you’re facing doubt, fear, or spiritual fatigue…

Don’t keep walking in the dark. Turn toward the Light. Follow Him and you’ll find that He was lighting the way all along.

The light of life isn’t out there somewhere. It’s found in Him.
